The UK jobs market (Sonia Hickey)

Today’s news claims that UK unemployment is set to rise by another 100,000 people come September 2012, mostly as a result of public sector cuts. Despite improvements in the economy, things still seem very sluggish in the jobs market. If you are having a hard time looking for your next role perhaps you will take some solace in the below article; http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17363798

To me it seems shocking on two counts that the first Jobseeker applied for 1,369 jobs in a year. Firstly, don’t count your rejections, it isn’t going to help you stay positive in the course of your search but more to the point, if you have not had any success in this many applications then clearly you aren’t reading the job descriptions and checking that you fit the employers requirements. This results in you wasting your own time, as well as an employers, and furthermore you will saturate the jobs market with your application to the point that even when you do apply for a suitable role, the employer will be familiar with you name as a non relevant candidate and so you may be overlooked.

Always tailor your application to each specific job, and particularly in the current jobs market, don’t waste your time taking a punt at applying for jobs you aren’t suitable for.
