It’s all over…Because of Facebook! (Hannah Coleman)

I wanted to talk about something that I thought was going to be light hearted for a Friday morning. So I thought why not Facebook. I love being able to keep in touch with friends I’ve met since travelling the world, family that I don’t get to see so often and generally being nosey. But then I came across an article that can only be described as…..well…..far-fetched. Or so I thought.

So, a woman has filed for divorce from her husband. OK, so that’s not news. But she has filed for divorce because of Facebook.  As I wondered what he could have done that was so bad that she would want to end their marriage, thoughts were running through my mind like maybe there was a photo of him acting inappropriately with another woman? Maybe he left the country without telling her and never came back? Well I was wrong. What was his ‘crime’? He failed to change his Facebook status to ‘married’…!

According to the article: “The social networking site was cited as a reason for a third of divorces last year in which unreasonable behaviour was a factor, according to law firm Divorce-Online.”

Social networking sites can be great for easily reconnecting with people, sending out invites to events, sharing photos of your life and having a bit of banter. But it can also be a hazard for relationships and people venting their anger at each other! I’m shocked that arguments have been caused because of things written on there, but also the information that some people divulge. I’ve even known people to deactivate their account as it’s less hassle!

I won’t be signing off of Facebook because I’m in a relationship. Although it does make you more wary of what your other half can see now that ‘Timeline’ is in place. Something I wrote back in 2010 was brought up recently!

But it does make me wonder how far is too far when you are ending your marriage because of a social networking site? I’m glad the couple are having counselling to sort through their problems. However, if ending a marriage over failure to update your profile, I dread to think what would happen if he worked late at the office…
